July 29, 2021 – Meet Kenny Childs Jr.! Kenny has been volunteering at the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County for almost two years! He is a dog enrichment volunteer who gives our adoptable dogs the attention and love that they desperately need until they find their forever homes.
Q. What does a day in your life at the shelter look like?
A. I grab some treats and do a little walk around and greet all the dogs. I see which ones seem like they could use some attention, how they all seem to be doing, and if there is anything I can help with. After that, I make the rounds trying to go in and spend as much time as I can with as many dogs as I can.
Q. What made you want to volunteer at the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County?
A. I have always loved dogs and animals. I always had dogs growing up! Besides donating, I just wanted to find a way to give back and help them find the best homes possible. When I first started volunteering, I was transitioning out of the army and was still looking for my next job, so I had a lot of free time. That’s when I decided I could go in and give them some of my time to help give the pups some love. It always helps my mood to go spend some time with them!
Q. What’s your favorite part of volunteering here?
A. Besides all the dog kisses and cuddles, I just like being around all of them, getting them to relax and feel loved. I know the dogs really appreciate the extra attention. I love to see them finally find their forever homes!
Q. If you could give one piece of advice about volunteering with the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County, what would it be?
A. Just to have patience. Not every dog will be happy to see you. Some will be scared and some will be stressed. Pay attention to their body language and know when you need to either go slow or try again at a different time. I have had dogs where I had to spend time outside the kennel to slowly gain their trust and was able to have the dog trust me enough to come over to me for some attention. It’s important to have some patience and understanding with them.
Q. Why are you so passionate about the work we do?
A. I’m passionate about the work the shelter does because I know how dedicated everyone is to help all the animals. I have seen how involved and helpful everyone can be. Everyone has the same goal, and that’s finding forever homes for all the great animals in the shelter’s care!
