Love lives on at the shelter

Jessica and Barrett.

When Jessica walked into the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County 11 years ago, she came across a sweet pup that needed a home – an Australian kelpie named Barrett. Jessica knew she had to adopt him, and the pair quickly became close companions. Little did she know just how much adopting a shelter dog that day would change her life and his.

“My favorite memories were just cruising around town together with the windows down and music playing, ” says Jessica Stewart, Barrett’s adopter. “He loved to sit in the front passenger seat and just look out the window peacefully and take in the sights. Sometimes it felt like he was more human than dog.”

Barrett enjoyed a second chance at a new life full of adventures.

“We enjoyed hiking, backpacking, and camping the most. He always kept me on my toes and oftentimes would beat me to the summit of many mountains!” says Stewart.

After many years of wonderful memories, sadly, Barrett passed away. He left behind many marks on many hearts. To honor Barrett, his portrait is now displayed on the shelter’s new Love Lives Forever Memorial Wall where his memory helps thousands of shelter pets find a second chance just like he did.

Barrett’s memory now lives on at the shelter on the Love Lives Forever Memorial Wall.

“I feel very honored to have Barrett’s memory on the tribute wall,” says Stewart. “He changed the lives of everyone he knew. He was loved deeply and will be forever missed.”
